“I’m sorry your child died. We love you.” So read Matthew’s note to the mother of his new donated heart. He was born with a set of complicated heart problems, requiring five major surgeries and an artificial “Berlin Heart” device, culminating in a heart transplant.
Matthew’s mom credits research with saving his life. “I believe that he wouldn’t be alive today if the American Heart Association had not funded the research that has been done in the past,” she said. Matthew adds, “The Heart Association needs money so scientists can invent stuff to save kids like me.”
