NORFOLK, Va. (April 12, 2018) — GEICO supervisor Sean Ocasio was honored recently with The Exemplar Award for his support of the United Way of South Hampton Roads. The Exemplar Award, named by the Hampton Roads Gazeti, is a way for nonprofits to publicly recognize and thank dedicated volunteers who embody the spirit of the organization’s mission.

Ocasio co-chaired United Way’s campaign at GEICO, increasing participation and engaging ‘Campaign Champions’ in every department. Campaign Champions bring the work of United Way to life across board rooms, break rooms, luncheons, leadership meetings and everyday conversations with co-workers.

“I’m motivated to help United Way because I believe that when you selflessly give just a few dollars, you can genuinely change people’s lives for the better,” said Ocasio. “When you empathize to the point of putting someone else’s needs before your own, then you connect people to the bigger picture – community.”

Ocasio helped energize Campaign Champions at GEICO and helped reach 56 percent engagement for United Way among GEICO’s Virginia Beach associates.  He also served as chairman of his own department and that department led campaign efforts at GEICO by raising $68,912.

“The annual campaign shows just what can happen when we work together, and it could never happen without the leadership and creativity of our Campaign Champions,” said Carol McCormack, president and CEO of United Way of South Hampton Roads. “Sean helped shine a light to how United Way makes a difference, and the response from GEICO’s employees was incredible. We are inspired by their generosity.”

Each year local workplaces hold United Way fundraising campaigns that allow corporate leaders and their employees to get involved and give back to the community. Participation in United Way campaigns ensures lasting, collaborative solutions to chronic problems that affect the people of Hampton Roads. With that support, United Way can focus on meeting today’s needs, while bringing together problem-solvers – from cities and nonprofits to donors and volunteers – to change the odds for women, children and veterans.
