Press Release

The United Way of South Hampton Roads (UWSHR) is uniting with local agencies and corporate partners to offer resources and support to those affected by the government shutdown. In preparation for the increase in calls to the United Way local assistance and referral sources, we are organizing efforts to help those seeking assistance with rent, mortgage payments, utility bills and groceries during the extended government shutdown.

Those needing assistance can access the following resources:

  • Veterans, active duty military and their families can get help by calling United Way of South Hampton Roads’ Mission United hotline at 757-858-7777. Mission United is a United Way-led initiative bringing together over 50 community partners to provide coordinated services to active duty service members, veterans and their families through a single entry point.
  • Members of the Coast Guard seeking assistance can call 877-272-7337. USAA, one of United Way’s corporate partners, has issued a $15MM grant to the Coast Guard Mutual Assistance to disburse as interest-free loans to Coast Guard personnel with the assistance of the American Red Cross, a United Way partner agency.
  • United Way is also working with our Regional Housing Crisis Hotline operated by ForKids, a certified agency, to help all others affected by the shutdown. To contact the hotline, call 757-587-4202.

Other United Way corporate partners have stepped up to offer assistance to furloughed employees. Please visit for a complete and updated list.

Additionally, United Way of South Hampton Roads is working to help local nonprofits likely to experience delays in their government funding, which can render them unable to provide many of the resources and services they typically offer the community. We are contacting our network of partner agencies and, based on need, will be offering advances to those who receive grant payments to help fill the gap and enable local agencies to extend their resources in helping local federal employees in need.
