Who We Are
We have a lot to be proud of as the Tocqueville Society. Out of 554 Tocqueville Societies nationwide, we are in the top 8% for dollars raised, thanks to our outstanding members.
We are a diverse group of over 200 who each understand the importance of giving year after year.
Our experience is meaningful because we don’t just give and walk away. We gather to see our investment put to good use, to celebrate our camaraderie, and to share our experiences in the business community.
More on the Tocqueville Society
Employees of Norfolk Southern and United Way spent the morning of Jan. 26 loading up two trucks for an important delivery. At-risk students at four Norfolk elementary schools were about to receive 1,200 new books and 500 backpacks. The four schools are affiliated with United for Children, a community collaborative of professionals passionate about removing barriers so that all children can succeed in school, in the workplace, and in life. A $20,000 grant from Norfolk Southern made the event possible.
The backpacks were filled with much-needed supplies. Norfolk Southern employees invested more than 80 hours stuffing them, as well as writing personal notes of encouragement inside each book. The donations will inspire Pre-K to 5th-grade students to excel at their STEM studies (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Increasing early childhood literacy, and helping children develop a love of reading are additional benefits of Norfolk Southern’s caring efforts.
Norfolk Southern happily going above and beyond
The deliveries came shortly after the conclusion of Norfolk Southern’s annual United Way Workplace Giving Campaign. Even though the corporation’s philanthropic employees had once again raised $1 million to help the community, they still wanted to do more.
The donated items were presented to eager groups of children at PB Young, Sr. Elementary, Jacox Elementary, Chesterfield Elementary, and Tidewater Park Elementary. One happy Jacox student said, “This is the happiest day of my life! I love to read, and I can’t wait to read about my new friend, Lulu. My favorite part of this book is my special message from Norfolk Southern in the front flap that reads, ‘YOU are amazing!’ This makes me smile! Thank you, Norfolk Southern!”
“This comes right from the heart,” said Dr. Jarrett Brunny, director of United for Children. “It is easy to see why we must continue to invest not only in services for children but in expanding their world and giving them opportunities to find their path. We are here because these are our neighbors, our partners, and our future.”

Did you know… Tocqueville members are responsible for more than one-third of the services, support, counseling, and assistance received by families and children from the agencies funded by United Way of South Hampton Roads!
Tocqueville leadership is committed to growing that percentage to reach even more children and their families. In 2011, we introduced the Step Up Match Program to accomplish two things – grow the dollars available for community services and increase the number of new Tocqueville members.
This Step Up Match program is designed to provide a pool of donor dollars to match Tocqueville prospects that are giving below the annual $10,000. The goal is to enable prospects to gradually increase their donation until they reach the full $10,000 Tocqueville Level of giving. Prospects will be required to commit to a United Way gift of $6,000 or more in year one, $8,000 in the following year, and then $10,000 in the third year.
Of course, our children and families in need will also benefit. Match dollars donated by current members to the match pool will go towards the United Way Community Impact Fund while Step Up members become increasingly invested in the Tocqueville Society. With current members assisting in making this happen, Tocqueville Society grows and our community benefits. National statistics show that once a Tocqueville level of giving is achieved, members maintain this higher level of giving for many years. Thus, your match investment at the beginning will yield high rewards for children and families of South Hampton Roads.

Letter From The Chair
We find ourselves in an extraordinary position. We possess the means and ability to actually improve the future. Not just for some. For many. With the help of the United Way of South Hampton Roads we’re able to focus Tocqueville Society influence and donations on what is most needed in the community, bringing impact to scale.
We’re in a position to help thousands of local children with their education through United for Children, chaired by Tocqueville member Lewis Webb. Our newest work is Mission United, chaired by member Scott Adams. That initiative focuses on the unique needs of our local veterans and active duty military families.
We can do all these things and more because, beyond their generous gifts, Tocqueville members play important roles in the community as business leaders, thought leaders and advocates of philanthropy. I am truly honored to serve as chair of our state’s largest Tocqueville Society and eager to see the rewards of our efforts in the brighter future that awaits us all.
